Just For The Sake Of It?

If one has to describe about one of the most ecstatic days from their humdrum life, those in school would probably churn out as the best option. For me, it wasn’t any different, in fact, when things became crude and coarse, school valiantly stood out there as a reliable option. While back in school, often the boys would boast of their obsession with Shakira, and I would be toying with them by retorting that she was way beyond their leagues and that they would never ever get a fair chance.

In the beginning, they would rebuke, snap and then eventually end up saying something like this, “You don’t really love in order to get loved in return. You just love for the sake of loving, and there’s no looking back…” Muttering such lines in front of a tormentor like me would invite more trouble for them, however, Shakira probably prophesied that she would keep all their problems at bay. Days passed, and their tryst with Shakira intensified, leaving me with no option but to fall for this sake of it thing…

In our old dilapidated apartment in Delhi, my roommate would often try out her culinary skills ranging from those sumptuous buttery Punjabi dishes, which weren’t really an eye candy for me, and everytime I would refuse, she ended up force-feeding me. While sipping our cuppa of Darjeeling tea, after a satisfying siesta, I would often ask her about her obsession with feeding me, when I’d decline everytime. Her yawns would emerge out as a replica of the unsatisfactory answer, and she would say, “Just for the sake of it man, and I like feeding health-conscious Bongs with Amritsari Kulche and Butter Chicken!”

I can probably pen an entire piece on my tryst with Delhi’s Butter Chicken, yet would choose not to deviate, only for the sake of you, dear readers. Now, as I write this, simultaneously I begin to ponder, that is this creative inclination a mere result of my overstressed imagination, or is it to spread frolic around, or probably just realising helps calm the soul?

Whatever it is, a new realisation strikes that ‘Just for the Sake of it’ is like an unknown protagonist in most cases. Little does it realise its immense capabilities, and chooses to remain in oblivion. Nevertheless, it has its own perks, probably Shakira is still unaware, yet you and I certainly aren’t. Are we?
